Deep within the mountainous heartland of Oman, Nizwa glows with historic elegance.

The Nizwa Souk sells many hand-made crafts like lamps and clothing items. The Nizwa Souk is a must-visit during your luxury Oman tour, offering a taste of local Omani culture and a range of beautiful souvenirs.

Perhaps the epitome of Middle-Eastern regal charm, the city of Nizwa is both the old capital of Oman and the home of one of the country's most precious historic gems.

The rustic, stone-built Nizwa Fort is famous for taking 12 years to complete during the 17th century. Its huge, circular stature towers over Nizwa, its walls seeping with mysteries of the Omani Empire and its courtyard providing a peer into a time long gone. With four cannons, 17 wells and a beautiful Castle Garden signifying an agricultural past, this glorious landmark is an essential during your holiday to Oman.

Just round the corner from the grand entrances to the Nizwa Fort, the sprawling character of the Nizwa Souk (Souq) opens a gateway to the modern-day currents of  Omani culture. This important market sells precious, local crafts, like clay vases and jugs, hand-crafted silverware and home-cooked delicacies infused with passion. The Nizwa Souk is a haven for those seeking unique souvenirs to immortalise their journey through Oman.

Nizwa’s charm extends beyond its historic core to the scenic beauty of its surroundings. Several of the best hotels in Oman are located in Nizwa, positioned to familiarise guests with the city's surrounding scenery, the Hajar Mountains. Paired with this striking landscape, Nizwa's encircling orchards and falaj irrigation systems introduce lush greenery to its otherwise stark topography.

The best time to visit Nizwa

Much like most of Oman, the best time to visit Nizwa would be when the temperatures are least sweltering, between October and April. In order to explore its glorious outdoor market and expansive fort and castle, you should visit Nizwa in its cooler periods.

Of course, if you wish to embark on a tour of Nizwa during its low season, between May and September, you are able to. However, you should come prepared for highs of 40 degrees and should avoid strenuous outdoor activities around its exterior mountainous terrain.
