Unearth the most beautiful secrets of Oman in the Jebel Akhdar mountains.

The Jebel mountains are craggy, with deep gorges and minimal greenery. Quaint villages and towns are hidden within the dramatic slopes and gorges of the Jebel Akhdar range.

Jebel Akhdar, also belovedly named the "Green Mountain", is an area in Oman renowned for its towering plateaus and craggy rock formations. This region of dramatic beauty forms part of the Saiq Plateau, which reaches 2000-metres above sea-level, providing travellers with a relieving breeze as they explore its twists and turns.

Jebel Akhdar is not your ordinary mountainous region, offering much more to intrepid travellers who seek its most magnificent parts. Here, the higher humidity levels and breezes account for a springtime bloom of vivid flowers like Damask roses and a cornucopia of fruits ready to be picked.

For those who seek outdoor adventure, hiking and glorious scenery during their holiday in Oman, head to Diana's Viewpoint in Jebel Akhdar. Named in testament to Princess Diana's visit in 1986, the viewpoint spotlights one of the most fabulous vistas in Oman. Below, a pretty village lined with terraced abodes sits peacefully, and ahead, narrow roads twist and turn between rising slopes.

Whilst the Jebel Akhdar mountains feel exceptionally remote and tranquil, only occupied by small villages inhabiting local people, you will discover a range of beautiful Oman hotels and resorts dotted around the slopes.

From the comforting terraces of these secluded stays, hike towards characterful villages, some of which are known for their rose gardens and some for their distinct mud houses. Explore natural caves and marvel at geological phenomena, including evidence of fossils! Breathe in a level of fresh air you have never experienced, and relish in a closeness with Oman's remarkable wilderness.

The best time to visit Jebel Akhdar

The best time to visit Oman to explore Jebel Akhdar would be during spring, when flowers and fruits are in bloom across the village gardens, like Al Aqar and Al Ayn. During this time, you will come across warm temperatures paired with a fair amount of wind - enough to make hiking a comfortable experience.

During winter, the Jebel Akhdar region can become very rainy, sometimes experiencing hailstorms. However, this is still a very popular time to visit due to the pleasant temperatures, and the rain doesn't often cause too many issues! Even during the summer heat in Oman, Jebel Akhdar offers a cooling respite from the sweltering temperatures of nearby cities - although, you will find the area is busier with locals during this time.
