Make yourself at home, the elephants certainly have

Elephant Bedroom Camp enjoys an enviable location in the heart of Samburu National Reserve. The camp’s 14 tented rooms are raised on platforms that are perched along the banks of the expansive Ewaso Nyiro River, with uninterrupted views across the water to Buffalo Springs National Reserve.

Elephant Bedroom Camp is surrounded by desert, trees and the river.

There is no age restriction at Elephant Bedroom Camp, and family rooms are available for those who request them. This is also a great spot for couples and honeymooners looking to complement a safari in Laikipia and the Masai Mara, as the landscape and wildlife are so vastly different.

From the patio of your room, you can watch hippos and crocodiles float downstream, herds of elephants, giraffes and zebra traverse both land and water and enjoy a riot of colourful birdlife in the doum palms overhead.

The camp is unfenced, so, as its name suggests, it is often visited by wildlife, especially elephants. A few have become very familiar with the camp and staff and are very much at home here. In the mornings, you’ll need to look where you’re walking as you may find a resident elephant ambling down the path in search of breakfast and in the heat of the day, don’t be surprised to discover a sneaky trunk has found its way into the cool, delicious waters of your private plunge pool.

If you’re happy to share your space with these precious pachyderms, then just beyond your doorstep, you’ll also discover lions, leopards, reticulated giraffes, Oryx, Grevys’ zebra, gerenuk and other unique species on your twice game drives, bush walks and sundowners.

The Camp

The focus at Elephant Bedroom is very much on getting out on game drives and taking in as much of the park and its fantastic wildlife as you can during your stay.

When you do find yourself back at camp, you’ll be glad to retreat to your room to rest up from your adventures. Your room is tented in style and constructed on a raised wooden deck with uninterrupted river views. The bedrooms are airy and spacious. You have access to a writing desk and casual seating area in each en-suite bathroom with a shower and hot and cold running water. Emerge from your room to a private patio with a plunge pool; an ideal spot to lounge about in the heat of the day.

In the common areas, you’ll find a reasonable Wi-Fi connection, a dining area, a bar and a lounge with a small shop. During the day, meals are served on the riverbank below the main building, and there are a few comfy seats to kick back and watch the world go by here, too.

Facilities & Dining

Day game drives, bush walks and sundowners as well as visits to local Samburu villages, can all be arranged during your stay. Vehicles are open-sided and take a maximum of six people.

Continental-style cuisine, buffet breakfasts, light lunches and three-course meals are the order of the day here. All meals are served alfresco where possible, and dietary requirements are catered for.

How a stay at this camp makes your trip more responsible

Part of Atua Enkup Africa, the Elephant Bedroom Camp interacts with and contributes to the Samburu communities that live close by. It has done so by building a local toilet block, marketing and displaying local arts and crafts in its shop and hiring people from nearby villages. The camp itself is also unfenced and is a fantastic representation of how we can successfully and respectfully integrate tourism projects into wilderness areas without disrupting wildlife.
