Why We Love It
The location of Tortuga Lodge and Gardens
The sheer variety of suites provides a breathtaking vantage point of the river and surrounding rainforest. And while this luxurious lodge is the perfect place to hit the hard reset, it allows you to immerse yourself in so much natural wonder that it feels hard to stay in for long. We’d recommend kayaking the mystical canals to spot some amphibious locals or taking an exhilarating hike to the peak of the once-fiery Cerro Tortuguero. However you choose to spend your time, you’re guaranteed to see some sights that no picture postcard or smartphone snap could ever do justice.

Witness the rainforest’s wild wonder from a luxurious riverside abode
A stay at Tortuga Lodge in Costa Rica is a unique and unforgettable experience. The property is designed with charming Caribbean flair, backing onto the natural beauty of Tortuguero.
Tortuga Lodge allows you to explore the wilderness from the shores of the Tortuguero River
The lodge is perfectly placed on a private and secluded island along the Tortuguero River. Only accessible by boat, this lodge is the most tranquil and relaxed setting for travellers to unplug and unwind. Pamper yourself at the spa with a deep tissue massage, or stretch it out with group yoga by the river. With all that in mind, the tranquillity of Tortuga Lodge can prove a difficult place to leave. But it’s well worth the adventure when you’re ready to do so. The good thing is you won’t have to go far to find it.
There are four short trails behind the lodge, giving you an exciting snapshot of Tortuguero’s tropical wildlife. Tread carefully and try turning over the underside of some leaves along the way; you may find a thumbnail-sized strawberry poison dart frog or two.
Quickly discover that the rainforest is twice as lively at night. So, take a twilight hike and listen out for troupes of Howler monkeys preparing their treetop nests. Listen to the mystical symphony of the jungle at night. When the day ends, the action is only just beginning below the forest canopy.
Of course, stay at the right time of year, and you’ll witness what this magical place is most famous for. A tour of one of Tortuguero’s beautiful beaches can lead you just a few feet away from a 300-pound green sea turtle. Then watch in awe as this beautiful creature lays up to 80-100 eggs. Extraordinary, emotional, and, like the wild and wondrous Tortuguero itself, simply unforgettable.
The Lodge
Tortuga Lodge has 29 rooms on offer, all providing a vantage point of the river and surrounding rainforest. All suites have a classic, Caribbean Victorian-style charm and offer an alluring place to lay your head or witness the theatre of the jungle.
The stand-alone villa, Miss Florentina, accommodates up to five guests and includes a relaxing wrap-around deck and a refreshing plunge pool. Miss Evelyn Balcony Suites sleep four, with a hanging bed outside to keep an eye on the action from above the canopy. Mr Mishal Downstairs Suites include a spacious terrace and seating area - perfect for families. Both The Papi Brown Downstairs and Miss Perla Upstairs Suites comfortably sleep four.
Facilities
Expect plush sleeping arrangements, ceiling fans, high-speed Wi-Fi, and solar-heated water in every room. The lodge’s restaurant serves delicious local and international cuisine, featuring fresh ingredients from their own organic farm and the surrounding area. There is also a refreshing variety of Caribbean-themed cocktails and Costa Rican beers or wines to choose from at the hotel bar.
On the ‘Tortuguero Jungle Experience’, guests are welcome to two daily activities. From motorised boat safaris in the canals of Tortuguero, kayaking, walking trails on Cerro Tortuguero, twilight wildlife walks and introductory tours of the Village and its history and culture.
There is also a large variety of hotel wellness and relaxation services.
Dining
The aptly named Green Turtle Restaurant lets nature do the talking at dinner. Step “inside”, and you’ll find no walls or windows, just panoramic views of the surrounding rainforest and winding Tortuguero River. Authentic Costa Rican Caribbean dishes are the order of the day that leaves an aroma of coconut and spices on your palate. Unsurprisingly in such a natural haven, vegetarians and vegans are well catered for; the banana ceviche tastes just as life-enriching as it sounds.
