Welcome to Medellin! Colombia's second largest city located in the north-western Antioquia Department, known as the "City of Eternal Spring" due to its year round pleasant weather. Medellín has transformed from its tumultuous past to become a vibrant and innovative metropolis.
The city boasts a dynamic cultural scene, with many museums, art galleries, and theaters. Its public transportation system, including the iconic Metrocable, connects diverse neighborhoods, offering stunning views of the valley. Medellín's thriving tech industry, lively festivals like the Flower Fair, and welcoming locals make it a fascinating destination for travellers seeking both urban excitement and scenic beauty for their holiday.
The city is a hub of vibrant Paisa culture with a delicious food and of course local Colombian coffee scene as well as many great museums and art galleries. Medellin is a very historic city with many attractions for vistors to explore. Jump on the iconic sprawling Medellin Metrocable which is an amazing way to explore the many neighbourhoods and hillside barrios where buses cannot reach due to the steep narrow streets. The metrocable has six lines which allows for seamless and easy travel around the city and allows those who want to go on a ‘self-guided tour’ of Medellin.
Explore Comuma 13 with a local guide, one of the most know hillside barrios it is a must-see destination. In the past it was once known as the most dangerous place in Colombia controlled by Medellin’s gangs, however it has undergone huge transformations in the recent years. One of these has been the Escaleras electricas project (outdoor escalators) which has ‘reconnected’ this neighbourhood with the rest of the city. Your local guide will be able to explain the fascinating history of the area and show you the wonderful vibrant street art as well the best viewpoints. This one dangerous area now is home to libraries, literacy projects and street art performances.
Head to the historic Old Quarter where you will find Plaza Botero which is one of the most beautiful squares in the Medellin. Witness the historic pieces of architecture and museums. There are many bronze statues including the iconic ‘Roman Soldier’ and ‘Eve’ by the Medellin born artist Fernando Botero. In this same area visit the Rafael Uribe Uribe Palace of culture, one of the most distinctive buildings in Medellin well-known for it’s black and white stonework and gothic arches, inside there is a library, gallery and a café.
The best time to visit Medellin
You can visit Medellin all year round with warm temperate weather most of the year making it an attractive place to visit, sometimes being slightly cooler in the evenings. December to March is one of the dry seasons with warm weather and little rain making it a great time for outdoor activities, exploring the city's parks, and festivals. Another dry season being July to August, when the annual Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival), which takes place in late July or early August. This festival is one of the city's most famous events, featuring flower parades, cultural events, and concerts.
The rainy season is within April to May and September to November. However the rain typically comes in short, heavy bursts, often in the afternoon. While there might be more rain, the city is lush and green, and there are fewer tourists, making it a more relaxed time to visit.
