Panoramic views and prime wildlife watching across Kwando’s floodplains and marshlands
Located on the floodplains of the Kwando River, deep in the eastern marshlands of the 232,000-hectare Kwando Reserve, the name “Lebala” aptly translates as “wide, open spaces.” Here, you’ll enjoy prime wildlife watching, spectacular views and a peaceful riverside ambience.
Witness spectacular views over the floodplains and marshlands
Lebala Camp is owned by the Kwando Safaris group, which is one of the best photography safari companies in Botswana; noted for gorgeous camps set in diverse wildlife destinations (usually private concessions), highly trained and professional guides, plus a personal touch.
The Kwando concession stretches over 232,000 hectares of wilderness, yet there are only two camps in this private reserve (the other is Lebala’s sister property, Lagoon Camp). Both camps are capped at 16 guests each, so you’ll feel like you have this corner of the wild all to yourself.
The floodplains have their own unique ecosystem, home to an abundance of plains game species, such as tsessebe, giraffe, impala, wildebeest and zebra. Other species to look for include elephants, buffalos and hippos - therefore, predators such as hyenas, cheetahs and lions are never far away.
Wildlife-watching activities available from Lebala include day, night and off-road game drives, plus walking safaris with local guides and trackers who know the land and its four-legged inhabitants best.
A diverse landscape of marshland, floodplains, bush, scrub, islands and water channels, the Kwando Reserve offers a wide range of environments and, therefore, a wide range of animal encounters. Don’t miss the resident African wild dogs; although critically endangered, Kwando is one of the best places on the continent to see them.
The Camp
Lebala Camp consists of just eight custom-designed tents, including one family tent with an additional twin bedroom within the same unit. Raised on Zimbabwean-style teak decks, each tent includes a private verandah and en-suite facilities featuring double sinks, a claw-foot bathtub, and double outdoor showers. Mosquito net walls mean that a cool breeze is always passing through, and you can enjoy the gorgeous views, even when you’re relaxing inside your tented living quarters.
Facilities
There is a small swimming pool, a gift shop, a bar and lounge area, a small library, a communal fireplace, as well as game drives and other activities.
Dining
A stay at Lebala Camp is full board. There is a communal dining area, although outdoor private dinners for special occasions can be organised upon request by the pool or fireplace.
How this camp makes your trip more responsible
Kwando Safaris are committed to responsible and sustainable tourism. The company ensures that their camps cause minimal impact on their surroundings (Lebala Camp is partially solar-powered), and they strive to minimise the footprint of your wildlife experience. Lebala Camp and Kwando Safaris support a project based in Maun called Mummy’s Angels, which helps less fortunate mothers and newborn babies who do not have adequate financial or family support. You can see a full, up-to-date list of supplies needed (mainly clothing/shoes and health/grooming items) on the Pack for a Purpose website under the Lebala Camp name. As a lead sponsor, Kwando Safaris matches every guest donation with a similar item. For more details about how you can pack supplies to donate in your luggage, contact our friendly team of Luxury Travel Specialists, or read our blog on how to use Pack for a Purpose.
