Discover the best time to visit India for you

India is a country of vast and varied landscapes. From the imposing Himalayas to the sandy deserts of Rajasthan and Gurjarat, there is something for every traveller. Due to India being such a big country, the best time to visit India depends on which region you are visiting and what activities you are wishing to do. However, there is always somewhere for you, whatever the weather throughout the year.

December to March

Throughout these months, this is generally the best time to visit regions with warm weather and cool evenings. For the northern hemisphere winter, in December to March, this is a great time to visit India to experience its vibrant cities and explore the wonderful historic temples and famous landmarks in Northern India. This is the peak tourism season for India as the warm dry weather these months bring offer beautiful conditions for outdoor adventures.

During these months it is a great time to travel to India for lowland adventures in the cooler temperatures, as wildlife enjoys hiding in the lush green surroundings. Enjoy heading out on safari in Rajasthan or other parks in Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Ranthambhore to try to spot majestic Benghal tigers, making for a once in a lifetime trip to India.

Alternatively, up in the hills it is magical to see Shimla sprinkled with snow, although in peak winter many of the hotels are closed and roads can be blocked with snow. A handful of towns in the hills stay open for those adventurous travellers wanting to head out skiing in India.

Throughout January to March, some of the countries top festivals take place - they are beautiful celebrations and wonderful to witness on your India holiday. Enjoy the rainbow coloured festival of Holi in late February or March.

April to June

India’s down season ranges through the months of April to June. Often within these months the temperature can be unbearably hot, especially the cities, and in May temperatures in the lowlands will also soar. However, even though the Northwest is wet, this is peak season for visiting Sikkim and the highlands of West Bengal.  For those travellers who can bear the heat, popular destinations such as the Red Fort will be quieter.

Alternatively, embark on an incredible Himalayas tour whilst the footlands are cooler, offering time for those more adventurous travellers to battle the ultimate hike. April and May is an amazing time for seeing wildlife in India, as temperatures in the central parks are very hot so the animals congregate around watering holes (although we’d recommend morning and evening for excursions). The spectacular region of Ladakh is accessible again from June and is a complete contrast to the rest of the country, as the days will have become sunny and clear, although you will need layers for warmth.

 June – November

The best time to visit the Himalayas is from June to November and perfect for India’s high-altitude trails through the magical mountains. Whilst rain can be expected it’s a great time for a hiking tour. As the rain clears from September, tourism picks up again in the plains and the foothills as people flood from the mountains. October and November are perfect months to visit almost everywhere else in India whilst primes remain below peak and skies are beautifully clear. During these months, it is a great time to head on a Rajasthan tour whilst it is wonderfully green.

Witness the best festivals in India as they also begin in full force in October and November - this is the season for visiting India for Dwali. Expect impressive fireworks and sparkling lights across the towns and villages in India. August is jam packed with festivals, including Kerala’s exhilarating boat race, which takes place on the 2nd Sunday of August, whilst elsewhere in Delhi patriotic flag hoisting ceremonies pursue to celebrate India’s independence. Being able to include a festival with your India holiday is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the nation's distinct culture.
