An authentic tented safari camp in the Mara North Conservancy, surrounded by amazing wildlife.
Offbeat Mara can undoubtedly boast that it has some of the best wildlife viewing in the Masai Mara. The pride of lions - the Offbeat Pride - are always within a short distance from the camp and can regularly be heard roaring in the Offbeat Valley.
Witness some of the best game viewing from this authentic camp
Combined with regular sightings of cheetah and leopard as well as the rest of the big and little game, there is little need to go elsewhere. Offbeat Mara has taken the traditional camping term and turned it into something rather special - fantastic guiding, a relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious food and outstanding management will make you feel right at home.
Situated in the Mara North Conservancy you have access to unlimited game drives, bush breakfasts, sundowners, guided safari walks and cultural visits. The Mara North Conservancy is a 320km² sweep of classic savannah bush country, the land broken into ridges and dry riverbeds, and is home to high densities of game. The wildlife includes several much-studied lion prides, such as the Acacia pride and the Gorge pride, named after the iconic Leopard Gorge, 5km north-east of Musiara Gate. The local Maasai and their herds still have some grazing rights here, so while on safari in Mara North you will see the occasional herder out with his cattle.
Offbeat Mara maintains its private homely feel by consisting of only seven tents. There are five doubles/twins and two family tents. The heart of the camp is the main 'mess' tent with its bar, dining area, sitting room, fireplace and forest deck. All the accommodation tents are en suite with flush loos and traditional hot safari showers. Each tent has its own veranda and is carefully positioned to offer wonderful views as well as privacy.
This lovely camp will really feel like a home away from home, most of the staff are local Maasai and create a friendly laid back atmosphere in camp. There is a wild feel here, without all the bells and whistles you really get back to nature and enjoy an authentic safari in the bush.
The Resort
This lovely permanent tented camp comprises of just 7 tents, 5 standard tents and 2 of which are family tents – connected by a dressing area. All tents are en-suite with flush toilets and bucket showers. Offbeat doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, yet the comfortable tents are light and spacious and have everything you will need on your safari adventure. Comfortable homemade cedar wood beds to lay your head at night, and sun loungers out the front to relax during the day. This unpretentious camp is perfect for safari purists who are looking for some amazing wildlife sightings and a welcoming camp to return to each day.
The main communal area is a great place to grab a drink and meet fellow travellers to swap safari stories. Set on a raised wooden platform is your destination for all meals in the central dining area. On one side pull up a stool at the bar the grab a cocktail, on the other nestle into the comfy couches before the fire to read your book. Whatever you may be doing keep an eye over the plains out front where animals often wander past!
Facilities
Enjoy your large canvas tent with private veranda and directors’ chairs to enjoy the views. The main area consists of a library, bar, dining area, and large deck/viewing area. All traditional safari activities are on offer from Offbeat. Head out on a safari walk, visit the local school or for those who want to, head out on a jog with your own armed ranger!
Dining
In your evenings you will enjoy communal dining around the ‘captains table’ often set up under the stars for your 3-course meal. Breakfast can be taken with you on your morning drive or enjoyed at the camp. All food is locally sourced where possible and fresh, wholesome food is to be expected throughout your stay.
How this resort makes your trip more responsible
As one of the founding members of the Mara North Conservancy Offbeat is committed to preserving this little slice of paradise. Over 90% of the Offbeat Mara staff are local Masai who helped build the camp! All now employed in various roles, from chef’s to guides and learning valuable skills to pass on to the next generations. Offbeat also supports the local Aitong School, with guests being able to visit and help support the school being a great initiative.
Offbeat also strives to have little to no impact on the surrounding ecosystem. With solar lighting, no permanent structures and very little changed or destroyed during construction they are a great example.
