Borana Lodge is the ultimate launchpad for an adventure in northern Kenya
With eight perfectly-proportioned cottages nestled unobtrusively onto the hillside, Borana’s environs have been designed to enhance its visitors’ experience of the area’s natural beauty. Thoughtful design touches provide the utmost comfort, and spectacular scenic views accompany every home-from-home the lodge offers its guests.
Borana Lodge offers a home-from-home luxury experience
Beautiful design notwithstanding, perhaps what distinguishes Borana from its competition better than anything is its vast array of activities (think splashing in waterfalls, mountain biking, horse riding, quad biking, hiking and more), combined with its remarkable conservation activities. The Borana Wildlife Conservancy is far less visited than its neighbors, meaning guests have an opportunity to explore the area with a feeling of it being almost exclusively theirs.
A history of environmental stewardship runs through Borana’s veins, and the lodge offers a multitude of opportunities to get hands-on with these activities. Borana’s nature as a non-profit means that all guests can rest assured that their stay contributes directly to enhancing and improving community and environmental activities.
Borana is also a wonderful choice for families, with a range of experiences being tailored to children, from gentle strolls on horseback to child-sized bikes perfect for taking down to the river for a picnic. Young guests will be especially impressed by visiting the real pride rock, said to be the inspiration behind Pride Rock in Disney’s The Lion King.
For keen equestrians, Borana is particularly renowned for its signature horse-riding safaris, and multi-day experiences can be arranged for guests with strong riding skills.
With its stunning location and diversity of activities available, Borana is the ideal choice whether seeking family fun or an active couple’s retreat.
The Resort
Borana Lodge is comprised of eight individual cottages and one main house, with two of the cottages being especially designed with families in mind. Made of rock and cedar, topped with traditional thatched roofs, the cottages all have verandas opening out onto a stunning view of the rolling plains, which even extend as far as Mount Kenya. Each room has an open fireplace which is lit each evening.
The main house boasts a spacious living area, an inviting dining room, a well-stocked bar, as well as a horizon swimming pool, overlooking a wildlife-filled waterhole in the valley below.
Of the cottages, the four individual properties are recommended for honeymooners or couples in search of privacy and romance. A further two cottages can be interlinked, which are a popular choice for friends travelling together, or families with teenagers. Finally, two well-thought-through family cottages are designed for parents traveling with their younger children, and feature two bedrooms within one cottage, with a spacious communal living area.
If, after an exhilarating day on safari, you can be tempted from your cottage, Borana’s Safari Spa offers signature treatments using organic, locally sourced ingredients. The lodge can cater to all dietary requirements, and guests can enjoy meals from the main house, from the privacy of their own cottage, or alternatively in a variety of scenic locations.
Facilities
The main lodge offers a horizon pool, a well-stocked bar and a comfortable living room. The Safari Spa helps guests unwind after enjoying the extensive array of activities available.
Dining
Featuring sustainably-sourced food grown on Borana’s very own farm, meals can be enjoyed in a variety of scenic and comfortable locations and tailored to any dietary requirements.
How a stay at this lodge makes your trip more responsible
At Wayfairer, we aim to work with properties that share our values of stylish, sustainable travel, making Borana Lodge a natural choice.
As a non-profit, Borana Lodge’s raison d’être is to underpin the vitally important conservation activities undertaken at the Conservancy. Since 2013, when a founding population of 21 rhinos was re-introduced, the population has thrived and risen to an astonishing 150+ individuals, speaking to the combined success of its considerable ecological conservation and anti-poaching efforts.
Borana’s sustainability mindset is holistic and underpins the entire running of the lodge. The lodge offers delicious farm-to-table food, coming from Borana’s very own farm, which employs ecologically-sound agricultural practices. The spa utilises all-natural products, sourced from the local area, and local communities are continually supported with medical and educational resources, as well as other services.
