A charming, long-standing family hotel with wonderful sea views

You’ll arrive by boat to Peponi Hotel, which is perched neatly on the northern tip of Lamu island, at the point where the estuary opens out to the sea and winding paths through ancient villages turn into a panoramic 14km beach.

The exterior of the estancia is dressed in white wood-panelling with a red roof.

The hotel was built in the 1960s by the Korschen family and what started as a simple four-bedroom guesthouse has transformed, across the generations, into an elegant 29 room hotel.

You’ll find a range of different room types at Peponi, from standard doubles to private villas, all with wonderful views across the water, ensuring there is something for everyone no matter your budget or preferred style of accommodation. The rooms are all uniquely decorated in coastal Swahili style and have quiet patios from which you’re heartily embraced by a refreshing ocean breeze.

Based in Shela village, most visitors to Peponi Hotel love to spend a morning strolling the pretty streets and browsing quaint shops full of locally crafted designs and trinkets. You can also take a tour of near-by Lamu Old Town, go deep sea fishing, snorkeling or enjoy a sunset sail with a cocktail in a traditional Lamu dhow.

No matter how you choose to spend your time at this much-loved, landmark hotel, you’re sure to find yourself quickly swept up in the friendly and inviting atmosphere and wishing you could stay just a little longer.

How this resort makes your trip more responsible

Peponi Hotel has a profound respect for the history and culture of Lamu. This is a conservative Muslim town and UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient, peaceful traditions that are admired by all who live and work at Peponi. During your visits to local areas you are asked to dress modestly, in line with the Muslim culture and behave responsibly. Their clear dedication to upholding the history and culture of this impeccably preserved historical area is admirable and very much in line with Wayfairer’s “leave only footprints” travel ethos.
