Luxury Vacations to Dominical & Uvita

Plan My Trip

Both tranquil and exhilarating, observing Humpback Whales from upon a golden shore is a second to none opportunity.

Located on the lusciously verdant Central Pacific boundary, Dominical and Uvita are perfectly paired destinations to provide you with a dreamlike journey across this gorgeous coastline. Around 162-km from San Jose, Dominical is a small and laid-back town with a “boho” vibe, offering you an authentic feel of provincial life in Costa Rica. With a vibrant beach market stretching along the scenic beachfront, and several funky, family-run restaurants and bars, the seclusion of Dominical places no limitations on your comfort and pleasure. Upon your arrival, a shared local compassion and respect for wildlife is penetrable, as local efforts exhibit the deep-rooted Costa Rican endeavor to rehabilitate struggling wildlife. The quiet, uncommercial atmosphere of Dominical breeds an ideal environment for aviary habitats, meaning the lowlands of this area are flourishing with flamboyant birds.  Dominical is famous for its supreme surfing conditions, as accomplished surfers travel here, especially for the consistent turbulence of the waves that wash up on Playa Dominical. Those looking for a thrilling encounter of the Pacific may wish to hop on a surfboard, whilst more chilled adventurers opt to bask in the cooling shallow waters, ahead of a canvas-perfect sunset. Whatever you decide, Dominical brinks on heaven with its scenic landscapes washed in warm hues, transporting you far from your busy lifestyle back home.  Around 19km southeast from Dominical – only a 20-minute car journey – lies the slightly larger, and more populated, town of Uvita. Famed for its spectacular “whale tail”, a giant rock and sand formation which juts out elegantly from the bay, Uvita’s natural beauty is unmatched. This natural phenomena forms part of one of Costa Rica’s only national marine parks, Parque Nacional Marino Ballena. The sprawling park champions dense, tropical mangroves, pristine shores, and incredible coral reefs bustling with aquatic life. As you journey toward the north of the town, Uvita Waterfall lies enshrouded in the emerald, leafy cloak of the rainforest. The fall forms a thrilling natural waterslide, embodying the wholesome pleasures of human unity with the earth.  The main showcase of the Costa Ballena, which stretches across both Dominical and Uvita, is the remarkably rare and magnificent opportunity to encounter Humpback Whales on their migrant journey. Whether you wish to observe these majestic mammals from the shore during peak season, or from a more intimate vantage point on a catamaran, this experience is sure to become a memorable timestamp in your travels.

When to go to Dominical & Uvita

If you wish to experience the best possible whale watching, it is best to correspond your trip with the annual migration cycle of Humpback Whales. Antarctic families of Humpbacks migrate to these waters around July, departing in November, whilst their Californian and Canadian relatives arrive just following in December, and depart around April. Of course, the timings of wildlife can never be perfectly predicted! However, specialists often recommend visiting from August to September if you yearn for a truly intimate encounter with Humpbacks, as they skim the Pacific surface. The Festival de Ballenas, which takes place in Uvita during the early days of September, welcomes you to celebrate this awe-inspiring marine beauty.

Although a small amount of rainfall is common all year round, the driest season of the Central Pacific coast is from December to June. Remember that green seasons in rainforest habitats bring personality to your jungle stay, so to avoid rainfall altogether doesn’t necessitate the most pleasurable trip!
