Trip Itinerary
Days 1-2: Los Llanos
Day 1 - Arrive in Colombia
Welcome to Colombia, hop on a 45-minute private charter from Bogota to Savannah Lodge’s airstrip. After you journey relax at your private pool in one of the lodge’s 6 bungalows overlooking Cravo Sur river. This afternoon head out horse riding alongside llanero cowboys searching for your first sightings of wildlife, including capybaras, deer, giant anteaters, howler monkeys and over 200 bird species. Learn about llanero traditions like riding barefoot, herding cattle, and work chants, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. This evening enjoy a delicious dinner at your lodge.
Days 2 - Activities at Los Llanos
This morning, head out for an early morning activity to go canoeing in search of wildlife along the small creeks, and afternoon exploring gallery forests and savannahs on an exciting 4x4 expedition. Guests will also have an opportunity to go fishing on Cravo Sur river. After an activity packed day, end the day with a traditional parrando llanero (llanero party) with live music and dinner around a bonfire.
Days 3-5: Bahia Solano
Days 3 - Transfer to Bahia Solano
Today, guests will set off on a private charter flight to Bahia Solano Airport. Upon arrival, they will board a luxurious 38-foot yacht that will take them to their secluded beach house. This exquisite retreat is surrounded by lush tropical jungles and features 200 meters of private beachfront, offering a perfect blend of comfort and nature.
In the afternoon, during the months of July through September, guests will have the opportunity to join a thrilling whale-watching excursion. Accompanied by a knowledgeable local biologist who speaks English, they will venture out into the ocean to observe these magnificent creatures up close. The biologist will provide fascinating insights into the behavior and migration patterns of the whales, making this a memorable and educational experience.
Day 4 - Enjoy Bahia Solano
In the morning, embark on a guided nature walk to search for rare and poisonous frogs that are unique to this region. This excursion offers a chance to explore diverse habitats while learning about the specific adaptations and ecological roles of these fascinating amphibians.
In the afternoon, visit a dedicated sea turtle nursery where you'll gain insights into local conservation efforts aimed at protecting these endangered species. Witness the nursery's work firsthand, and take part in the rewarding experience of releasing newly hatched turtles into their natural ocean habitat, contributing to their survival and growth.
Day 5 - Activities in Bahia Solano
Starting with morning scuba diving or snorkeling with whale sharks from March to June is a must-see experience. Follow it up with an afternoon jungle trek to a waterfall, then unwind with sundowners and a bonfire on the beach. The combination of marine adventure, lush jungle exploration, and relaxing beachside moments makes for a perfect adventurous day.
Days 6-8: Cartagena
Day 6 - Transfer to Cartagena
After a wonderful few days at the beach, guests will jump on a commercial flight from Bahia Solano via Medellin to Cartagena. Arrive in Cartagena and transfer to your hotel, Hotel Casa San Agustin, an exquisite yet relaxed boutique hotel in Cartagena’s Old City.
Explore Cartagena, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the expertise of a knowledgeable guide who will offer you a deep dive into the city's remarkable history, vibrant culture, and stunning architecture. Wander through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, where colorful colonial buildings and grand fortifications stand as testaments to Cartagena's storied past. Marvel at the impressive Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a formidable fortress built to defend the city from pirates and invaders. Experience the lively atmosphere of the local markets, where you can sample traditional Colombian cuisine and interact with friendly locals. Discover the city's rich cultural heritage through its museums, churches, and historic plazas, each offering a unique glimpse into Cartagena's evolution from a strategic port to a bustling cultural hub.
Day 7 - Trekking in forests near Cartagena
Embark on a thrilling trek through a tropical dry forest, a unique and delicate ecosystem, in search of the rare and highly endangered cotton-top tamarin monkeys. This expedition is designed with conservation experts to ensure that your journey not only allows you to witness these elusive primates in their natural habitat but also contributes to their ongoing protection and study.
Guests will have the opportunity to encounter howler and capuchin monkeys, each adding their own charm and character to the forest’s vibrant tapestry. The forest is also home to dozens of exotic bird species, offering a feast for the eyes and ears as you observe their colorful plumage and listen to their melodious calls.
This experience is crafted to focus on conservation, allowing you to gain insights from experts on the challenges faced by these species and the efforts being made to safeguard their future. After a busy day exploring head back to your accommodation for the night.
Day 8 - Explore Cartagena
Today guests will head off on board a local fishing canoe cruise through the mangroves of La Boquilla, and learn about this special ecosystem and the dozens of birds that inhabit it. In the afternoon explore Cartagena’s vibrant local life in Getsemani neighbourhood. Getsemaní is a vibrant and historically rich neighborhood in Cartagena, Colombia. Located just outside the city’s walled historic center, it offers a blend of colonial charm and modern flair.
Days 9-11: Sierra Nevada
Day 9 - Transfer to Sierra Nevada
Following a cultural few days in Cartagena and surroundings, guests will get a private transfer to the Sierra Nevada mountains in Northern Colombia. En route, stop at a coffee hacienda founded in 1892, to learn about coffee harvesting and processing. Arrive at Casa Oropendola, a private lodge located between cloud forests and coffee fields, with a perfect view of the Caribbean ocean.
Day 10 - Explore Sierra Nevada
Enjoy your first full day in the mountains, enjoy birdwatching in one of the world’s top birding areas, thanks to the 20+ endemic species. The forest and mountains are rich with wildlife and the perfect location for hiking.
Day 11 - Depart Colombia
Sadly your wild Colombia adventure has come to an end and you will be transferred to Santa Marta Airport for your flight home with lots of wonderful memories made.
