Include a visit to the famous World Heritage Site, the Coffee Region in Colombia
Colombia is famously known for it’s coffee so it is a must-see destination for your Colombia Vacation to go and see the country’s Coffee Region which is the second largest exporter of coffee in the world. The Coffee triangle was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011 to honor the mountainside farming. The region encompassing six farming areas, is located within the foothills of the western and central range of the Andes.
The Coffee Axis covers Caldas, Quindio, Risaralda and the north of the Cauca Valley, stretching across mountains and hills covered in lush coffee plantations. The triangular area within the limits of Medellin, Bogota and Cali, is the traditional coffee landscapes and where the coffee beans are handpicked and graded before being roasted and bagged for export, you can really take in and appreciate the skill that goes into a cup of coffee! The friendly people will welcome you to visit the cocoa and coffee plantations. For the ultimate way to see the beauty of the coffee region, soar above in a hot air balloon taking in the spectacular views. There are many fincas scattered across the coffee highlands and invites guests in and show them around the farms. The terraced slopes and the temperate climate make it the ideal climate for growing coffee which is sold all over the world. Whilst in the area guests must visit a coffee plantation to witness the process involved and you may even get to taste the coffee bean. Other than cultural coffee tours for those more adventurous travelers head off on a hiking adventure in the Los Nevados National Natural Park which is home to the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano and relaxing hot springs. The Coffee region is rich with colourful birdlife, so the perfect destination for avid birdwatchers. Lastly, during you visit, a must see is a visit to the Cocora Valley with some of the most beautiful landscapes with the endless mountains and rivers, perfect for fishing, horse riding and trekking.
The Best Time to Visit the Coffee Region
The best time to visit Colombias Coffee Region depends on what activities you are doing but the region is generally a year-round destination with the climate staying relatively temperate. The dry season being during the months of December to March and July to August. Typically being the best weather with little rainfall making it a great time for exploring coffee plantations and hiking.
The rainy season runs during April to June and October to November which can bring heavy rainfall, although normally in short bursts with sunny periods following. The landscapes are lush and green making for beautiful scenery.
