Plunge into the wild beauty of the most iconic rainforest in the world, the Amazon.
The world's largest tropical rainforest, the Amazon, blankets across northwestern Brazil in a dazzling display of natural harmony. The rainforest sprawls across seven other countries, including Colombia and Venezuela, bringing its bounty to a wide range of communities. Often referred to as "the lungs of our planet" this is a dream-like world which is both mesmerising and tragically at risk.
The Amazon Rainforest is a natural playground renowned for its diversity, bordered by some of South America's most dramatic mountains (including the Andes), and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Within its leafy bounds, around one third of the world's species collaborate in a mind-blowing web of ecosystems, where the agile puma sneaks past the carefree sloth and Red piranhas whirl past peculiar pink dolphins.
Living harmoniously alongside the thousands of species which inhabit the Amazon Rainforest are a range of indigenous communities who have maintained lifestyles which date back hundreds of years. Including both the Yanomamo and Kayapo tribes, Brazil's indigenous population is passionate about the wellbeing of the Amazon Rainforest, using its natural resources carefully and creating a mutually dependent relationship.
The Best Time to the Amazon
The best time to visit the Amazon Rainforest depends on what you want to do. If you seek the winding hiking trails in the Amazon, you should visit during the dry season, between July and December. Due to the Amazon's tropical climate, you should never expect completely dry conditions, however there will be less rainfall during this time.
However, if you seek the Amazon's aquatic beauty, perhaps on an Amazon boat tour, you should visit when temperatures are more mild, during the wet season, between January and June. You are more likely to spot more mammals, like monkeys, during the wet season. However, the beaches on the riverbanks are inaccessible during this time.
