Billowing white tents, desert palms and sparkling salt pan views of Makgadikgadi, this is San Camp
Simple and minimalist, San Camp is about showcasing the natural wonders of the Great Salt Pans. Escape into the glistening pans, and you’ll be treated to panoramic views so epic and otherworldly you can actually see the curvature of the earth.
Enjoy panoramic views of the Great Salts Pans
Located on the edge of the Nwetwe Pan, in the heart of the Kalahari and next to the Makgadikgadi National Park, San Camp is under the umbrella of the Natural Selection Group, which provides safaris with character.
Wildlife to look out for here include the rare brown hyena, springbok, gemsbok, zebra, wildebeest, ostrich, lion, elephant, red hartebeest and adorable meerkats. Turn your gaze upward, and you’ll spot bird species such as Kori bustards, northern black korhaan and chestnut-backed finch larks.
Traverse the salt pans by quad bike to truly feel like you’ve disappeared into nowhere, join the Zu/’hoasi Bushmen on a bush walk to learn about the land from those who know it best, then take day and night game drives in custom 4x4 vehicles to wildlife-watch with a difference.
The Camp
The seven-bedroom camp is comprised of five twin tents and two doubles, all facilitated with en-suite bathrooms and indoor showers. Each room features large four-poster beds, luxury bedding, Persian rugs, mahogany writing desks, leather armchairs and daybeds to recline on outside, the perfect spot to take in those incredible views.
For a lesson in natural history, take a look at the cabinet collections in the camp’s common areas, housing historic maps, fossils and other artefacts.
Facilities
Facilities include a yoga and meditation pavilion, stargazing, and safari and adventure activities.
Dining
Despite a remote and unforgiving location, you’ll enjoy delicious dishes such as beef Wellington, freshly-baked tartlets, and a drool-inducing three-layer banana and caramel cake.
How this resort makes your trip more responsible
San Camp runs entirely on solar power, aiming to have a minimal footprint, and runs all activities with the environment and local community in mind, particularly the local bushmen.
Natural Selection supports the Makgadikgadi-Nxai Pans Conservation Initiative, which aims to improve conditions for mammal migration in the region using sustainable economic incentives for wildlife-friendly land.
If you’re interested in making a donation to a local project, either financially or by packing much-needed supplies or resources, speak to one of our Luxury Travel Consultants about relevant responsible projects and initiatives present in the areas you’re visiting.
