An authentic bush camp surrounded by the wilderness

The emphasis here is on small group walking safaris, and with its incredible setting, authentic bush camp atmosphere, highly experienced guides and friendly team, it is undoubtedly the best walking safari camp in the Okavango Delta.

Walking in the wilderness with an expert guide offers a unique opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the environment, and it is a completely different experience from sitting in a safari vehicle.

On your walks, your expert guide will teach you about plant life and the Delta's fascinating ecosystem, and they’ll also give you an insight into tracking wildlife.

You’re likely to see plenty of animals, including herds of elephants, buffalos, zebras, wildebeests and impalas, plus sightings of red lechwes are common. And along the permanent waterways of the Delta, you might be lucky enough to see the elusive sitatunga antelopes and more common reedbucks and waterbucks. The area is also known for its predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas.

Although the focus is on walking safaris, game drives, mokoro and motorboat excursions, and bird watching are also possible. However, for a complete Okavango experience, we recommend that you combine Footsteps Across the Delta with a stay at another camp where game drives are the main activity.

The Camp

The Footsteps Across the Delta Camp has three specially designed Meru tents, complete with sewn-in floors and mesh windows to keep out insects. The simple and functional tents are furnished with twin beds with comfortable mattresses and quality linen, a wooden chest, a cupboard and a bedside table. (Note: one of the three twin-bedded tents can be converted into a family unit that sleeps five). Within the tent, there are extra blankets, an umbrella, two pairs of flip-flops, a couple of kikoys, a rechargeable lamp, insect repellent and a flask of cold water. Outside the tents, there are two director’s chairs where you can sit and gaze out at the magnificent views or enjoy a gin and tonic as you watch the sunset.

Each tent has its own private bathroom with a flush toilet, wash basin and bush shower, which is topped up with hot water on request. Tucked away in the bushes, there’s also a private bath tent with an African-style iron bathtub. Set apart from the tents is a simple open-sided dining tent where guests sit around a communal table and enjoy delicious meals prepared in the bush kitchen by a talented chef and cooked over an open fire and in a ‘ground oven’. After dinner, guests gather around the roaring campfire and swap stories of the day’s wildlife sightings.

Facilities at this simple camp include three specially designed Meru tents, a private bath tent, and an open-sided main tent with a communal table and a well-stocked bar.

Dining

Guests enjoy breakfast before their morning walks, and lunch is served on their return to camp. Afternoon tea is offered before the afternoon walks, and a three-course dinner is served in the evenings.

Footsteps Across the Delta put great emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly tourism practices at their camp, and they aim to offer a walking safari experience that doesn’t impact the habitat of the wildlife in the surrounding area. The camp is semi-permanent and is set up in a way which has minimal impact on the environment, and they ensure that when they move the camp, they will leave no trace that they were ever there. The camp avoids using plastic and instead uses natural and recycled materials wherever possible, including stainless steel and glass water bottles.
