A brand-new camp invites guests to six tents to revel in unspoilt wilderness
Just six tents lie in the remote southwest of Botswana’s private Selinda Reserve. Stripped back and authentic, the exclusive camp recreates the atmosphere of the very first safari on the revitalising pathway of the Selinda Spillway.
Relax in luxury in the heart of the Selinda Reserve
‘Selinda Reserve’ is Arabic for ‘beloved one’, and it’s true that this unspoilt wilderness shouldering the Okavango Delta is a prolific location for wildlife enthusiasts. It is within the 320,000 acres of protected and beloved land that Okavango Explorers Camp will have as its base.
The prestigious safari company Great Plains opened the camp on the 1st of July 2022 , and as they are responsible for some of Botswana’s finest camps, we expect that Okavango Explorers Camp will be a fantastic addition to its other camps in the reserve, Selinda Explorers and Selinda Camp.
In a prime location on the southwestern corner of the Selinda Reserve, the new camp is on the revitalising pathway of the Selinda Spillway. This is where the Okavango Delta entwines with the Kwando / Linyanti river systems - the location and meeting place of two unique and iconic ecosystems. Running like a main artery through the reserve, the spillway brings with it the most wonderful wildlife viewing opportunities.
Visit from May to October for the dry season, and expect to see prides of lions, large herds of elephants, and endangered African wild dogs. The landscape lends itself to a wonderful variety of wildlife viewing adventures, and the deep flowing channels and lily-covered wetlands entice hippos who bathe in the lagoons.
Reminiscent of discovering the African hinterland, the camp exudes an ethereal spirit which takes visitors back in time to the original Botswana safari. With beautiful East African adornments and recycled soft furnishings, the footprint of the lodge is minimal, but experientially guests will feel the maximum involvement with the surrounding wilderness.
The Camp
Situated within Botswana's 130,00-acre Private Selinda Reserve, Okavango Explorers Camp is an intimate and exclusive place, offering top-notch service and breathtaking encounters with wildlife. The property is operated by Great Plains Conservation, and it offers six expedition-style tents with en-suite facilities, such as an indoor shower, flush toilet and a private verandah, that fit twelve guests. As a result, it feels like you have this corner of the wild all to yourself. There is an additional tent for pilots and/or tour leaders. For those who like to be sociable, there is a communal area, a fire pit and an open dining area that serves wholesome cuisine and a variety of drinks like wines and spirits.
Facilities
The facilities at Okavango Explorers Camp include a large communal area featuring a fire pit and an open-concept dining area set on a raised deck with views over the water. As you'd expect, the camp's activities are safari-inspired, with game drives, guided safari walks, and water-based activities like mokoro trips, explorations of the waterways by boat and catch-and-release fishing, which all take place during the appropriate seasons.
Dining
At Okavango Explorers Camp, there is a lounge, dining area, and bar. The camp ensures there is a bush breakfast for you to enjoy during your game drives, while a cooked brunch is also available at the property. Lunch consists of a buffet spread, while evening meals are a communal affair and often laid out under the stars. The camp can cater for vegans, as well as vegetarians, and all drinks, including wine and spirits, are included with your stay.
