Why We Love It

The prime riverside location and privacy of the Kwando concession means that you’ll enjoy game drives with a difference – follow the local African wild dog pack on the prowl, meet the three major lion prides of the Kwando Reserve, then encounter huge herds of elephant and buffalo on their ancient migratory routes.

African wild dog dens, migrating elephants and sunset cruises down the Kwando River

Tucked away on the banks of the Kwando River, sheltered under the branches of marula and ebony, Kwando Reserve’s Lagoon Camp is riverside relaxation incarnate. Watch herds of elephants come to drink at the river’s edge, whilst pods of hippos splash in the waters.

Lagoon Camp is owned by the Kwando Safaris group, which is one of the best photography safari companies in Botswana; noted for gorgeous camps set in diverse wildlife destinations (usually private concessions), highly trained and professional guides, plus a personal touch. The Kwando concession stretches over 232,000 hectares of wilderness, yet there are only two camps in this private reserve (the other is Lagoon Camp’s sister property, Lebala). Both camps are capped at 16 guests each, so you’ll feel like you have this corner of the wild all to yourself. The Kwando Reserve is noted for an abundance of big game favorites, such as elephant and buffalo, as well as for African wild dogs, one of the continent’s rarest species. In the past, they have reliably denned in the concession; however, the location and accessibility of this do vary from year to year. Other species of note which call this area home are rare brown hyena, honey badger, serval, civet, lion (the three local prides are known as the Holy Pride, the Bonga Pride and the Marsh Pride), leopard, kudu, baboon, antelope (eland, roan and sable), zebra, giraffe, impala and wildebeest. Don’t miss the camp’s daily afternoon river cruise, when Lagoon’s double-decker boat drifts down the Kwando, so you can wildlife-watch with a sundowner in hand. Observe critters big and small come to bathe or drink, as well as the region’s colorful and diverse bird life. At Lagoon Camp, you can enjoy day, night and off-road game drives, plus walking safaris with local guides and trackers. Try your hand at fishing between March and December (January and February are peak breeding season), to get a glimpse of life beneath the river’s surface.

How this camp makes your trip more responsible

Kwando Safaris are committed to responsible and sustainable tourism. The company ensures that their camps cause minimal impact on their surroundings (Lagoon Camp is partially solar-powered), and they strive to minimize the footprint of your wildlife experience. Lagoon Camp and Kwando Safaris support a project based in Maun called Mummy’s Angels, which helps less fortunate mothers and newborn babies who do not have adequate financial or family support. You can see a full, up-to-date list of supplies needed (mainly clothing/shoes and health/grooming items) on the Pack for a Purpose website under the Lagoon Camp name. As a lead sponsor, Kwando Safaris matches every guest donation with a similar item. For more details about how you can pack supplies to donate in your luggage, contact our friendly team of Luxury Travel Specialists, or read our blog on how to use Pack for a Purpose.
