The Linyanti, Kwando and Selinda region is made up of three huge private reserves, where high concentrations of wildlife congregate around the Kwando-Linyanti river system. The reserves - Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, Kwando Reserve and Selinda Reserve - form a pristine area, with stunning scenery and exceptional game viewing.

Safari activities here are more wild. You’ll get off the beaten track with private, off-road game drives, where you’ll find lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, giraffes, African wild dogs, and an incredible array of antelope, including waterbucks, reedbucks, kudus, roans, sables and impalas.

The Kwando and Linyanti rivers bring life to the region, and large migrating herds of buffalo, elephant, zebra and wildebeest gather each season around these waterways.

The opportunity for adventure is everywhere in this region. Take a game drive through the dry Savuti Channel in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, go in search of African wild dogs in the Kwando Reserve, one of the best places to see these rare creatures in Africa, or see the hippo-killing lions of the Selinda Reserve, made famous through the National Geographic films of Dereck and Beverly Joubert (the part-owners of Selinda Camp).

For a truly wild expedition, embark on the thrilling four-day canoeing safari along the Selinda Adventure Trail, traversing the ancient Selinda Spillway by canoe and on foot, and staying in fly-camps each night. You’ll cover around 45km along the trail, observing an abundance of big game and over 300 recorded bird species.

When to go to Linyanti, Kwando & Selinda

The best time to visit the Linyanti, Kwando and Selinda regions is during the dry season from April to October. Temperatures are cooler, the humidity is lower, and game viewing is at its best. July to October are the prime months for wildlife viewing, as vegetation thins and water levels recede, forcing animals to gather around the remaining water sources, making them easier to spot. The hottest month is October, with blazing temperatures. The wet season runs from November to March, bringing lush green scenery, newborn animals and exceptional bird watching as migrant birds return and resident birds show their colourful breeding plumage. Thicker vegetation and frequent downpours can make game viewing more difficult. Between December and March, some roads may become impassable, and some lodges can close.
